Membership and Support
Total 2014-15 membership in UCSF EFA is 111, of whom 67 are paid renewals and 44 new members. Membership fees are waived for new members. In addition to income from membership fees, UCSF EFA receives financial support from the UCSF Provost’s office. Alumni University Development and Alumni Relations provides services and logistic support. The venue for all EFA events is the UCSF Alumni and Faculty House.

EMERITIDINGS                                                                          EFA’s newsletter EMERITIDINGS is now issued online 3 times per year. The newsletter features announcements of upcoming programs sponsored by the EFA, campus and system-wide developments of interest to retired faculty, proceedings of system-wide Council meetings, and information about competitive research grants and awards available to emeriti.

Luncheon meetings and speakers

The UCSF EFA sponsors 3 free speaker/luncheons annually.

On Nov 7, 2014, Prof. Emeritus of Anatomy Peter Ralston presented a lecture on What’s New in Human Evolution?  EVERYTHING!!! “.  Ralston’s talk described current advances in this exciting and rapidly “evolving” field.
On March 6, 2015, Professor of Clinical Pediatrics
Melvin Heyman, spoke on “Mission to Misson Bay”.  Heyman described the challenges and opportunities presented by the recent move of the Departments of Pediatrics, Women’s Health, and Oncology from the Parnassus campus to the new Beniof Children’s Hospital in Mission Bay.

UCSF Dickson Emeritus/a Professorship Award

Three recipients have been selected for 2015 Awards, they are:

Kathleen Puntillo, RN, PhD, FAAN, FCCM

Professor Emerita, School of Nursing

Project: Translating research into practice: palliation of thirst in Intensive Care Unit patients.


Louis F. Reichardt, PhD

Professor Emeritus School of Medicine (Physiology)

Project: Web production of videos illustrating scientific approaches to major medical challenges through collaboration with iBioSeminars.


Robert H. Levin, PharmD, FASHP, FCSHP

School of Pharmacy (Clinical Pharmacy)

Project: Implementation of California SB 493 for students, residents, faculty and alumni.


UCSF 150th Anniversary


UC San Francisco celebrates its 150-year anniversary with a series of events throughout 2014-15. From the Gold Rush to the birth of biotech and the ongoing expansion to a new campus at Mission Bay, UCSF has played an integral role in San Francisco’s history and has assumed a leadership position in the transformation of health worldwide.


Alumni Excellence Awards. As part of the anniversary celebrations, UCSF has recognized 150 alumni with Excellence Awards. Fourteen emeriti are among the recipients: Adele E. Clarke, PhD, Nancy Milliken, MD, Nancy N. Byl, PhD, PT, Paul Ekman, PhD, Marilyn E. Flood, RN, PhD, George A. Gregory, MD, Jane Elizabeth Hirsch, RN, MS, Robert H. Levin, PharmD, Marilyn C. Savedra, DNS, Harold E. Varmus, MD, Sally Heller Rankin, RN, PhD, Don Ganem MD, and Marylin Reed Lucia MD.  The EFA will launch its Legacy Project with videotaped interviews of the 14 honorees. The videotapes and transcripts will be archived in the Special Collections section of the UCSF Library for use by historians, other scholars and the media.


UCSF Alumni Weekend Retirees and Emeriti Reception

A reception jointly sponsored by the UCSF Retirees and Emeriti Associations will take place Friday, May 29, 2015, 5pm – 6:30 pm at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco.  The reception will feature socializing and updates from representatives of each Association. Following the reception, attendees are invited to the All-Alumni Kickoff Wine Tasting and Reception, 6:30-8:30 pm.
