UC Santa Barbara Emeriti Association Report
Change in Leadership
Owing to David Sprecher’s decision to move to New York, Doug Morgan (Economics) was unanimously elected President of the UCSB Emeriti Association late in the fall quarter. New board members include Bill Ashby (French & Italian; CUCEA representative) and Tonia Shimin (Dance).
The UCSB Emeriti Association will award cash prizes in the 2009 UCSB Undergraduate Research Colloquium, sponsored by the UCSB Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity. Fuding for the prizes comes from donations by emeriti. Committees of emeriti faculty will award a first and second place prize, based on their judgment of research or creative activity presented in the posters displayed at the Colloquium.
The Association again hosted a fall and a spring quarter luncheon, to which all emeriti are invited. Chancellor Yang attended both events, along with assorted administrators. The speakers were as follows:
Fall: Wallace Chafe, Professor emeritus of Linguistics and Panunzio prize winner. Presentation title: "The Importance of Not Being Earnest: Humor, Laughter, and Emotion"
Spring: Richard Oglesby, Professor emeritus of History. Presentation title: “Legacy in Stone – A Look Back at Old Santa Barbara”
In conjunction with the Retirees’ Association, a quarterly newsletter was again published and distributed.
