Change in Leadership
Owing
to David SprecherÕs decision to move to New York, Doug Morgan (Economics) was
unanimously elected President of the UCSB Emeriti Association late in the fall
quarter. New board members include
Bill Ashby (French & Italian; CUCEA representative) and Tonia Shimin
(Dance).
Undergraduate Prize
The
UCSB Emeriti Association will award cash prizes in the 2009 UCSB Undergraduate
Research Colloquium, sponsored by the UCSB Office of Undergraduate Research and
Creative Activity. Fuding for the
prizes comes from donations by emeriti.
Committees of emeriti faculty will award a first and second place prize,
based on their judgment of research or creative activity presented in the posters
displayed at the Colloquium.

Luncheons
The
Association again hosted a fall and a spring quarter luncheon, to which all
emeriti are invited. Chancellor
Yang attended both events, along with assorted administrators. The speakers were as follows:
Fall: Wallace Chafe, Professor emeritus of
Linguistics and Panunzio prize winner. Presentation title: "The Importance of Not Being Earnest: Humor, Laughter,
and Emotion"
Spring: Richard Oglesby, Professor emeritus of
History. Presentation title: ÒLegacy in Stone – A Look Back at Old Santa

Newsletter
In
conjunction with the RetireesÕ Association, a quarterly newsletter was again published
and distributed.
