UC Santa Barbara Emeriti Association Report

Spring 2014

In conjunction with the Retirees’ Association, a quarterly newsletter continues to be published and distributed.  Recent issues have been expanded to keep emeriti better informed.

Spring 2014 CUCRA/CUCEA Meetings

Several planning meetings with representatives from the Retirees’ Association have lead to UCSB’s hosting the Spring 2014 CUCRA/CUCEA meetings.  These will be Wednesday, April 30, and Thursday, May 1.  The meetings will be held at the Mosher Alumni House on the UCSB campus.  The Wednesday evening dinner will be held at the Glenn Annie Golf Club in the foothills of Goleta.  A special rate will be available at the Pacific Suites hotel, near campus.

Spring 2014 Spring Get-Together

The Spring Get-Together will be held on May 12 at the Mosher Alumni House.  In addition to a social hour, it will feature a presentation by Mark Weinsoff entitled “Applied Optimism.”

UCSB Undergraduate Research Colloquium

The UCSB Emeriti Association is planning again to participate in the 2014 UCSB Undergraduate Colloquium on May 20.  This is a poster session featuring student research and creative activity supervised by UCSB faculty.  Thanks to the generosity of our emeriti, we will be awarding $2600 in prizes to the top ranked entries in the categories of mathematics/sciences, social sciences, and arts/humanities.  Teams of emeriti will serve as judges.

Appointment of Dickson Emeriti Professorships at UCSB is governed by the following policy (Red Binder VIII-11, III), which states:

The Dickson Emeriti Professorship will be awarded on an annual basis for a term of one academic year. There is no limit to the number of times an individual may be appointed.

Endowment funds may be used to support recall appointments for teaching, research, or public service of an emeriti faculty member.

An annual call will be issued during Winter quarter for nominations for the next academic year. Recommendations are to be forwarded by the Department to the Executive Vice Chancellor, via the Dean. Authority to make appointments to the Dickson Emeriti Professorship will be held by the Executive Vice Chancellor. The Executive Vice Chancellor will have the discretion to make multiple appointments for any given year.

The Departmental recommendation should state the proposed use of the funds and the proposed activity’s relevance to the department, unit, campus or University as a whole.

In accordance with this policy, the call is sent by the EVC directly to department chairs and directors, with a copy to the Deans.  The department or ORU makes the initial recommendation, the relevant Dean reviews and recommends, and the EVC makes the final decision.

The current balance in the UCSB campus account, as of 3/31/14, is $52,774.12.
