UC Irvine Report- April 29, 2010

The Center:

The UCI Center for Emeriti & Retirees (Center) has 1 part-time director, 1 retiree assistant and a handful of wonderful volunteers, who include the two Presidents from the UCI RA and UCI EA.  Together we coordinated 4 newsletters and ~15 programs and events this year, as well as the dues communications for both Associations.  The Center also coordinates discounted access to parking, athletic events and certain cultural/performance events as well as acts as the sponsor for continuing UCI email addresses and access for all Emeriti and Retirees.

The UCI EA:

The UCI EA has an Executive Committee of approximately 20 which meets monthly. The committee features Officers and two retiree assistants who share in duties specific to the UCI EA.   The President of the UCIRA and the Center Director attend the monthly meetings.  The UCI EA provides a quarterly newsletter via email/mail (with administrative help from the Center), an annual Holiday Party, an exclusive tour of the Center for Conservation Research in Escondido, an Outstanding Faculty Mentorship Award, an Outstanding Emeritus Award and hosts an Annual Meeting of their Membership which, this year, will feature as keynote speaker, Dr. Sidney Golub, who will speak on Stem Cell Research.

The UCI RA:

The UCI RA has an Advisory Board of 7 that meets three times a year and/or as needed.  Members of the UCI RA advisory board each champion one of our key events and/or directly help out at the Center office.  The UCI RA events include the Annual Emeriti & Retiree Art Exhibit, an Annual Golf Tournament and co-sponsorship of the Healthy to 100 & Beyond lecture series (detailed further below).

The Budget:

Knowing that UC Irvine would be facing severe budget reductions this year, the Center director met with both UCI RA and UCI EA presidents, last year, to discuss options and propose an action plan, which has allowed us to weather this year and maintain our programming. We are jointly meeting with our campus administration now to champion our efforts and look at the coming year.

Our Year in Review:

Fall

-All three entities co-sponsor the annual Open Enrollment Information Session for Emeriti & Retirees which features key talks from each of the various health plans regarding offerings and/or plan changes.

-The Center provides a Free Flu Shot Clinic in coordination with our Medical Center each Fall.

 - The Center provided a Roadmap to Medicare/Medicare Advantage Plans Information Session with our speaker provided from HICAP.

Winter

-Each year, all three entities co-sponsor a Chancellor’s Reception for all UCI Emeriti & Retirees which is held the same night as the Annual Art Exhibit.  The Chancellor is the keynote speaker. This event hosts between 125 (if it is raining) to 200 attendees.  The Center handles all logistics and communications. UCI RA volunteers assist with logistics.  In addition, the UCIEA Awards committee sent 6 nominations for the Dickson Endowed Emeritus Professorship to the Executive Vice Chancellor/Provost.  The Chancellor selected Robert Folkenflik (English) and Ellen Greenberger (Psychology and Social Behavior).

Spring

-In coordination with most of our sister campuses, the Center worked from the wonderful UC Davis concept to organize a ‘Healthy to 100 & Beyond! Challenge and Lecture Series’.  The campus administration was delighted with the idea such that we opened the program to include active faculty and staff – a first for UC Irvine!   The effort began in March 2010 and will culminate in May 2010.  Over 155 participants signed up on-line to choose a healthy habit to maintain for ~100 days.  Each of the seven lecture sessions, featuring speakers from UCI Senior Health Center, UCI MIND and the UCI Program in Geriatrics, held on consecutive Tuesdays, was well attended (35 to 75 attendees).

-The Center coordinated a Dana Point Ocean Institute private tour in March for approximately 40 attendees.

Summer

-The UCI EA Annual Membership Meeting is June 7th with a keynote speaker prior to the actual business portion of the meeting.  The EA committee and assistants acquire the speaker and coordinate all materials for the meeting. The Center organizes the room and communications for the event.

- The UCI RA Annual Golf Tournament will be June 8, 2010.  Players of all levels are welcome! The Advisory Board representative coordinates the golf facility, lessons and tournament rules and running.   The Center and UCI Health Care Facilitator communicate with vendors for donations and assist in set-up and gift bags.
