UCI EMERITI ASSOCIATION REPORT 4/25/2012
The UCI EA continues steadily with the same number of overall emeriti and a slight increase in dues paying memberships. We continue to look for innovative ways to interest newer emeriti.
Monthly Lunch at the UClub: We have reserved a table for Emeriti at the University Club for lunch on the first Thursday of each month.
Other Programs: In conjunction with the Center for Emeriti & Retirees and the UCI Retirees Association, the following have been/are programs offered to our constituents since our last joint meeting.

January 24, 2012- Alzheimer's Research Update 2012
Fank LaFerla, Ph.D., Director, Institute for Memory Impairments and Neurological Disorders, UCI MIND. Discussion of the newest information and research regarding Alzheimer's and other Dementias from the continuing work at our own UCI MIND.
January 31, 2012 - The Highs and Lows of Diabetes Management and Prevention
Mary Jean Christian- Registered Dietician and Certified Diabetes educator at the Joslin Diabetes Center at UC Irvine. See how the American diet is effecting diabetes statistics and what you can do now.
February 14, 2012- The Aging Eye: What is Normal and What is Not
Marjan Farid - M.D. Director of Cornea, Refractive, and Cataract Surgery and Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology for Gavin Heart Eye Institute will discuss macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataract, diabetic eye disease, and the newest treatments for these conditions.
February 21, 2012- Brain Attacks: What You Need to Know about Stroke Prevention
Lama Al-Khoury- M.D. Assistant Clinical Professor, will discuss the causes of stroke, how to recognize stroke symptoms, and learn about the latest medical advances in stroke prevention and intervention.
March 6, 2012- The Effects of Aging on Voice and Swallowing
Sunil Verma- M.D. University of California, Irvine Medical Center, Laryngologist, will show us how the voice box works, how the throat changes with age, and which conditions affect voice and swallowing.
March 21, 2012 - Making Sense of Medicare Information Session at the University Club.
April 30, 2012 - Annual Chancellor's Reception for all Emeriti and Retirees featuring Chancellor Michael Drake as keynote speaker, AND,
Our 5th Annual Emeriti and Retirees Art Exhibit, University Club, Library Room, 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
June 4, 2012 - 4th Annual Retirees & Friends Golf Tournament, Costa Mesa Golf Course, 11:00 a.m. start. Awards and buffet reception immediately follows.
June 5, 2012 - UCI Emeriti Association Annual Membership Meeting, with our keynote speaker Professor William Schonfeld who will speak on "Challenges to UCI: Budget, Politics, Growth, etc.”. University Club, 10:00 a.m. to Noon, McCulloch Library Room. "
Senior Living Community at UCI: We developed, in conjunction with the UCI Retirees Association and the Center for Emeriti & Retirees, and disseminated a survey to determine the interest of our emeriti and retired staff in a retirement facility on UCI territory. We have about a 10% return of responses, 90% favoring a facility.
