UC Irvine Emeriti Association

CUCRA/CUCEA Meeting October 2015

Executive Committee:  The UCI EA is guided by our Executive Committee which meets monthly. We collaborate with the UCI Retirees Association under the administrative umbrella of the UCI Center for Emeriti & Retirees (CER), which is managed by our director, Jeri I. Frederick and staffed by ~6 volunteers who are in the office each week and another ~30 retiree volunteers who help with all programs and events. Our Center for Emeriti & Retirees has recently moved and restructured.  It is now under Alumni Relations rather than Human Resources and housed in the new Newkirk Alumni Center building on campus.

Keeping in Touch with Faculty Welfare:  UCIEA is an official advocate for retired faculty welfare, benefits, and continuing participation in campus life and university governance.  We are welcome and hold Emeritus seats on the UC Irvine Council for Faculty Welfare and the UCI Academic Planning Group to keep apprised of the campus climate and provide input from an emeriti perspective.

Community Series:  Starting in March of 2015 we embarked on offering a quarterly Community Lecture Series with wine and cheese reception inviting not only emeriti but all retirees and the community to encourage collegiality and membership. Speakers are selected by our Program Subcommittee from UCI emeriti or current faculty.  Topics so far have included:

Š        From Tiananmen Square to Hong Kong’s Occupy Central: Dissent and Its Enemies in the People’s Republic of China.

Š        Segesta: A Trojan City in Sicily?

Š        Air Pollution and Climate Change: Lessons Learned

Our next lecture will be:

Š        December 8th– Join us for a light appetizer reception with our guest lecturer, Richard L. Hasen, Professor of Law and Political Science at UC Irvine.  Hasen is a nationally recognized expert in election law and campaign finance regulation, and is co-author of a leading casebook on election law.

Note:  we have found that although the idea of wine and cheese reception is met with high enthusiasm, very little wine is consumed.

Annual Meeting:  Our annual meeting in June featured our Outstanding Emerita/us Award to Professor Juliette Flower MacCannell,  Comparative Literature and English.  We also enjoyed a lively keynote address by Prof. Spencer Olin on the topic of Democracy in Peril: Global and Local Perspectives.

CCRC Collaboration: This year, we have been especially pleased to note that our campus collaboration with Regents Point, a local Continuing Care Retirement Community directly adjacent to UC Irvine, has been met with more than expected interest.   The collaboration allows entrance fee discounts as well as priority on the waiting list for UCI emeriti/retirees and their family members and for the family members of active faculty and staff.  We thank our Director, Jeri Frederick, for her work in facilitating this collaboration.

Improved Websites:  Our website at http://sites.uci.edu/emeriti/ now hosts an In Memoriam page http://sites.uci.edu/emeriti/in-memoriam/

which is often more up to date than waiting for the official UC In Memoriam page.   You may also view our UCIEA newsletters and other information of interest to UCI emeriti on our website.
