UCIrvine Emeriti Association (UCI EA) Report
CUCRA/CUCEA Meeting – Spring 2015
We hold monthly Executive Committee meetings at the University Club on the second Thursday of each month at 10 a.m. to which all emeriti are invited.
Annual Business Meeting/ Outstanding Emeritus/a Award
Our 2015 Business Meeting with Professor Spencer Olin as keynote speaker will be held on June 9, 2015 at 10 a.m. at the University Club in the Samuel McCulloch Library Room followed by lunch. As UCI professor emeritus of history and the 2006 recipient of the campusŐs prestigious Lauds & Laurels Extraordinarius Award for his longtime service to the university, Olin co-authored the book Postsuburban California: The Transformation of Orange County Since World War II and has also focused his research on the university itself.
The Business meeting will also award the 2015 UCI Outstanding Emeritus Award.
Annual Reception with Chancellor
Each year the UCI EA , UCI RA and Center for Emeriti & Retirees collaborate with the ChancellorŐs office to hold a Reception to honor all UCI emeriti and retirees and at which the Chancellor is the keynote speaker.
This year the event will not only recognize the 50th Anniversary of UCI with a highlight of all founding faculty and staff but also the 10th Anniversary of the Center for Emeriti & Retirees which was created under our current director.
Planning for UCIrvineŐs 50th Anniversary
In addition to hosting a January Celebrate 2015 wine and cheese reception, the UCI EA is assisting the campus to keep emeriti and retirees included in campus events to include School functions, an Emeriti & Retiree Event scheduled for September 28 or 29th and an all-campus celebration on October 3rd.
Quarterly Scholarly Lectures
The UCIEA Program Committee is coordinating a quarterly lecture series. The first in the series was March 13th and featured Jeffrey Wasserstrom, ChancellorŐs Professor of History at UCI, on the topic of: From Tiananmen Square to Hong KongŐs Occupy Central: Dissent and Its Enemies in the PeopleŐs Republic of China, 1989-2014. He has written four books, including China in the 21st Century: What Everyone Needs to Know, contributed to newspapers such as the New York Times, and has been interviewed several times by NPR.
Success of Senior Living Collaboration
In coordination with the Center for Emeriti & Retirees, we have finalized the (first) agreement with a local CCRC, Regents Point, that will provide priority entrance and up to 50% reduced entrance fees for UCI emeriti/retirees as well as the parents/grandparents of current UCI faculty and staff thus being of benefit to both retired and active employees.
