UC Santa Barbara Emeriti Association Report
Emeriti Association President Morgan continued his practice of issuing periodic e-mail communications, apprizing members of developments relating to post-employment and health benefits. These reports were distributed to all UCSB emeriti, as well as to retirees.
In conjunction with the Retirees’ Association, a quarterly newsletter continues to be published and distributed.
UCSB Undergraduate Research Colloquium
The annual UCSB Undergraduate Research Colloquium is sponsored by the UCSB Office of Undergraduate Education. It is an opportunity for UCSB undergraduates to present their research and creative activity to the campus community in the form of a poster presentation. It also serves to acknowledge the UCSB faculty’s contributions to the development of undergraduate research and creativity.
It was an exciting day in May, 2012, for the authors of the 143 posters on display. Thanks to the generosity of members who donated to the Association’s Prize Fund, over $2600 was distributed to students whose work was judged superior. The Emeriti Association Prizes are the only awards given in this event. First, second, and third place prizes were awarded to the top entries in humanities and fine arts; engineering and physical sciences; and psychology and social sciences. A cadre of eighteen emeriti faculty served as judges, who evaluated the posters and interviewed the students. The judges were recruited and coordinated by members of the UCSB Emeriti Association Board.
UCSB Emeriti & Retiree Associations 2012 Fall Get-Together
The annual UCSB Emeriti & Retiree Associations Fall Get-Together was held on Friday, October 12, from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm at The Faculty Club. After a welcome from Chancellor Yang, the event began with a social hour enhanced by wine and refreshments, followed by a talk.
Gerardo Aldana, UCSB Associate Professor of Chicano Studies and of Anthropology gave a presentation entitled “Wall Street and the Mayan Apocalypse: Exercising Patterns in Randomness.” This was a timely talk, given that, by some accounts, the Mayan calendar predicts the end of the world in December of this year.
Tom Scheff, Emeritus Professor of Sociology received the Constantine Panunzio Distinguished Emeriti Award.
Napoleon Chagnon, Emeritus Professor of anthropology, was elected to the National Academy of Sciences.
Gerald Jacobs, Research Professor in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, received the Edgar D. Tillyer Award from the Optical Society of America.
Robert L. Sugar, Research Professor of physics, was named Fellow of the Americn Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
Notable Emeritus Gift
Professor emeritus Duncan Mellichamp and his wife, Suzanne, have established a third cluster of four faculty chairs at UC Santa Barbara. The clustered Mellichamp Academic Initiative Professorships give UCSB a total of 13 Mellichamp chairs. The couple to date has made contributions totaling $6 million to support the chairs meant for outstanding mid-career faculty. Together these comprise the largest gift ever by a UCSB faculty member.
There are currently 261 UCSB Association members, who have paid their dues for 2012-2013. This represents a substantial increase over last year.
