UC Irvine Emeriti Association Report
UCRA/CUCEA Meeting - Fall 2013
UC Irvine has 377 emeriti, with approximately 30 percent being dues paying members and almost 100% being on our email listserv. By collaborating closely with our Center for Emeriti and Retirees for programs and services, all our Emeriti are included in our invitations and updates regardless of paid membership.
Regular Meetings and Monthly Lunch at the UClub
We hold monthly Executive Committee meetings at the University Club on the first Thursday of the month at 10:30 a.m. As of January 2014, these meetings will move to the second Thursday of each month. We have reserved a no-host table for Emeriti at the University Club for lunch, following the Executive Committee meeting.
Update on Senior Living Community at UCI
Subsequent to an interest survey (two years ago) and multiple discussions and informal meetings, we now have established a formal campus committee on a potential Senior Community at UC Irvine. This committee has representation from the UCI Emeriti and Retirees Associations, as well as from the UCI Administration and is exploring a relationship with an existing CCRC adjacent to the campus.
The Emeriti Association Executive Committee will participate in a pilot project, in collaboration with appropriate campus entities, to carry out exit interviews by Emeriti with Senate members who are leaving/have recently left UCI. We envision a brief (no longer than 15 minute) interview by phone or in person to assess why the individual left UCI and what we can do better. The information obtained will be useful to enhance faculty retention; improve the academic climate at UCI and inform the administration.
During the summer, the UCI EA presented the 2013 Excellence in Mentoring awards to:
John Hipp, Criminology, Law and Soc.
Judy Olson, Information & Computer Science,
Jodi Quas, Sociology & Behavioral Sciences
The 2013 Outstanding Emeritus/a Award was presented to :
Rein Taagepera, Political Science
The 2013 Edward Dickson Professorship Awards were presented to:
J. Hillis Miller, English, and Keith Nelson, History.
Coordinated by the Center for Emeriti & Retirees and in cooperation with the UCI Retirees Association, the main focus for the Fall is in providing programs to help our retired faculty and staff with the Open Enrollment changes. In Irvine’s case, this has left our Medicare retirees with no HMO option that includes our UC Irvine physician group which is a serious problem.
